Intro:
Recently the Washington NFL team has removed there old name as it was offensive and played as the Washington Football Team. They have also recently stated that they plan on finding a new name by 2022. This new name would also come with a new logo. There have been many polls online for a new name and one that has been a clear favorite has been the Red Tails. The name honors the Tuskegee Airmen who were the first African American flight group in the U.S. military who served in the second World War. They painted the tails of their planes red, hence the nickname ‘Red Tails’. I decided to use this name for the new logo design as it was a fa favorite, it would allow the same franchise colors to be used (burgundy, gold, and white), and it flipped the franchise around from using a derogatory term to using a name that highlighted African American achievement.
Research:
I had a new name for the team but I needed to know more about NFL logos and what they looked like so I did some research.
I found that most NFL teams had a logo that pointed to the right or suggested motion in that direction. If the teams logo did not follow that pattern it most likely was symmetrical. Secondly I found that most teams used an icon or mascot for their logo and if not they most likely used the letters of their city they are located in.
I also decided to use the most recently updated NFL logo as an inspiration for my design. The most recently updated NFL logo was the LA Rams logo.
This logo uses both aspects of icon and city name for their logo. The are able to combine the LA with the horns of a ram. This logo establishes the team mascot as well as the location and perfectly associates the two so that whenever you think of LA you think of the rams and when you think of the team you think of it’s city; LA. I therefore am going to design a logo with the letter W, for Washington, as a priority and then I will look to incorporate an icon for the Red Tails into the design.
