Project: Creating a comic explaining Covid testing at WPI

Partner: Theodore Solomonides

Here are the final pages for our comic:

We added a title slide to give context to our comic and let the viewer know what they were reading. We also added a panel at the end to connect back to the idea of keeping the WPI community safe. We used official WPI branding and tried to use inclusive words that would draw the reader in, referencing community and the phrase “We’ve got this!” help to achieve that goal of inclusivity.

Our slide that focused on the test procedures emphasized image use with text like we mentioned in the previous post. We started with the very first thing that you do which is swiping your key card, then we showed our character socially distanced in line. We separated these to images with a text box to give the images context and to strengthen the relationship between our text and images. In order to make the directions clear we decided to show everything that would be on the testing table and number them with the steps in order to have a list that works well with an image. The text and the image are also side by side to further help that relationship and make it even easier to understand each step. If you look at the one page alone the images alone cannot tell the reader what is going on, and the text alone do not give a good visual for the viewer. As a result there is a dependency between the text and image that we wanted to create and successfully did so where they work together to help the reader understand the content.

We again tried to make the panel layout easy to understand while still making the pages look unique and different from each other.

Our last slide wraps the comic up by ending the characters ‘journey’ saying that the results of the test should be emailed soon and then connects the testing to a broader idea of the responsibility of keeping the WPI community safe.

We also went back and added a mask onto our character when he leaves to go to Harrington as a mask is required and it helps to remind the viewer that.

Conclusion:

Our goal was to make a comic about Covid-19 testing at WPI. I believe that my partner and I created a fun comic that is easy to understand and can help inform WPI students about how to get a test and how the testing actually works. The comic itself uses a good mixture of words and text that rely on each other to develop content that is interesting to our audience. We also connected the comic to a bigger purpose about keeping the community safe and included our target audience in that message.
